XXII Summer Olympic Games Medalists – 30 years after
The celebration in honor of the XXII Summer Olympic Games Medalists was held in Kiev (Ukraine) on July, 21st. Initiated and organized by the National Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Ukraine for Family, Youth and Sport, this event assembled 35 Ukrainian Olympians to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the 1980 Moscow Games. Holding this celebration in Kiev was quite symbolic as it was one of the cities outside Moscow that co-hosted the Olympic competitions three decades ago. From July 19th to August 3rd, 1980, in the capital of the former USSR, 92 Ukrainians competed as a part of the Soviet Olympic Team, 41 of them taking the top step of the podium, 19 – winning silver medals an 18 – finishing with a bronze. Now the majority of them are still involved in the sports development in Ukraine, while their lives serve as prime examples for younger generations of athletes. Among those who attended the celebration dinner were Bohdan Makyts, Stela Zakharova, Volodymyr Kyseliov, Serhiy Postrekhin, Tetiana Prorochenko, Sergiy Fesenko, Olga Zubarieva, Valentyna Lutaieva, Iryna Palchikova, Natalia Tymoshkina, Liudmyla Poradnyk and other legendary Ukrainians who triumphed in Moscow in 1980. The invitees were particularly pleased to meet the XXII Summer Olympics Bronze Medalist Iuriy Tamm, who now lives in Estonia and came to Kiev specially to join the celebration. The meeting was held in a friendly atmosphere and proved to be a real success. Just for the occasion the film was made and shown to the Olympians, reminding them of the priceless moments of their victories in Moscow. A prominent Ukrainian sports reporter, Faryd Dasayev, who covered the Olympic competitions 30 years ago, was selected a presenter for the celebration and contributed greatly to making the meeting cordial and full of positive emotions. Nobody left without memorable gifts; even those Olympians who for some reason did not manage to attend the celebration will get their presents by post. Having athletes’ welfare as one of the primary concerns, the NOC of Ukraine will keep on paying special attention to Ukrainian Olympians.
