Olympism Birthday Was Celebrated in Kyiv
On 19 June Ukraine's capital celebrated Olympic Day, unique mass sport celebration that is traditionally held on the occasion of the establishment of the International Olympic Committee (23 June 1894), and this year it was also devoted to the 20th anniversary of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine foundation (22 December 1990). Having started in Hydro Park with the race of the Ministry of Interior staff, the celebration moved to the main square of Kyiv. Here the President of the National Olympic Committee, Olympic champion Mr. Sergey Bubka and Minister of Ukraine for Family, Youth and Sports Mr. Ravil Safiullin congratulated Kyivites and guests of the city on the main holiday of sport and Olympism. Ukrainian sport leaders conveyed warm greetings and wishes on the occasion of Olympic Day from the President of Ukraine Mr. Viktor Yanukovych, Prime Minister Mr. Mykola Azarov and Parliament Speaker Mr. Volodymyr Lytvyn. Traditional athletics runs, which then began at Independence Square, gathered about 2500 participants from kids to seniors. Preschoolers, schoolchildren and students came at the start of races inspired and elated, and none left without gifts from the National Olympic Committee and commemorative certificate signed by the President of the International Olympic Committee Dr Jacques Rogge and main Olympian of Ukraine Mr. Sergey Bubka. Those participants who were the fastest received special diplomas and gifts from the NOC and its partners. After the runs participants of Olympic Day extended the celebration according to their interests and could test their knowledge of the history of the Olympic movement in quizzes, try their agility and strength in competitions "Sports Records" and demonstrate creative abilities in the contest for the best picture, and, finally, enjoy a festive concert with the participation of Ukrainian pop stars.
