The NOC of Ukraine marks 19 years since its foundation!
19 years ago – on December, 22, 1990 – by the I General Assembly of NOC founders’ decision The National Olympic Committee of Ukraine was established. In September, 1993 the Committee was recognized by the IOC. The popularization of healthy life-style, the promotion of professional sports, the expansion of Ukraine’s international relations and the consolidation of the country’s positive image – all these tasks have been successfully fulfilled by the National Olympic Committee for almost two decades. However, the principle mission of the NOC has always been the ensuring of the Ukrainian Olympic team’s proper preparation for the Games: during the outgoing year two important events have been on course – the Winter Games that will start in Vancouver in 52 days and the First Youth Olympic Games that will be held in Singapore in August, 2010. In close cooperation with state and public organizations the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine for the first time in its history has worked out “The National Olympic Movement Development Program” for 2005-2010 that implies a number of events aimed at popularization of the Olympic ideas and principles. The Olympic Day Run and the Olympic Week celebrations, the All-Ukrainian Olympic Lesson, the Annual Award Ceremony “The Heroes of Sports Year”, awarding the best athletes and coaches of month, the sports photo exhibitions and many other Olympic actions are important and welcome events now. During 19 years of its existence, the NOC of Ukraine was headed by Valeriy Borzov (1990-1998), Ivan Fedorenko (1998-2002), Viktor Yanukovitch (2002-2005). On June, 23, 2005 the prominent athlete, the Olympic Champion Sergey Bubka became the leader of the Ukrainian Olympizm. Under his direction, the National Olympic Committee keeps on actively involving the population of Ukraine into the Olympic Movement. The growth of financing greatly facilitates this process. Starting from 2007 NOC gets annual government funding for the implementation of its programs. Considerable financial support is rendered to the Committee by its numerous sponsors. The transparent ranking system was introduced for the allocation of financial support to the National Federations based on the models of the best world practice. The role of the regional Olympic divisions has increased considerably and the NOC pays special attention to their activities because successful implementation of the Olympic ideas and projects requires support all over the country. During the presidency of Sergey Bubka the National Olympic Committee represented Ukraine at the XX Olympic Winter Games in Torino 2006 where Ukrainian athletes won 2 bronze medals and at the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing 2008 where 27 Olympic medals, the greatest number during independence years, were added to the glory of Ukrainian sport.
