Tomorrow June 23 the world Olympizm will celebrate the 115th anniversary of the IOC foundation. At the same time on June 23, 2005 the XVIII Extraordinary General Assembly of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine elected a legend athlete, an Olympic Champion and 35 times world record holder, the IOC member and the Hero of Ukraine Sergey Bubka President of the NOC of Ukraine. Later, in November 2006, Mr. Bubka was reelected the President of the NOC of Ukraine for the next 4 years period.
For the years of Bubka’s presidency the Olympic Movement reached a qualitatively new and higher level in Ukraine. The Program of the National Olympic Movement for the period of 2005-2010 – the first fundamental Olympic document of the years of Independence – was developed and has been successfully implementing.
Involving the best world Olympic practice and initiating national projects the NOC starts to play important role in social and sports life of the country. The traditional projects such as the All-Ukrainian Olympic Lesson, the Olympic Day, the Annual Award Ceremony “The Heroes of Sports Year”, awarding the best athletes and coaches of month, the sports photo exhibitions and many other Olympic actions are important and welcome events now.
The co-operation with the Olympic Movement entities has reached a new level. Clear and transparent ranking system was introduced for the allocation of financial support to the National Federations based on the models of the best world practice. Confidence of sponsors and partners in the NOC President ensured effective collaboration and attracted necessary funding for the implementation of the NOC programmes.
The role of the regional Olympic divisions has increased considerably and the NOC pays special attention to their activities because successful implementation of the Olympic ideas and projects requires support all over the country.
In addition, during the presidency of Mr. Sergey Bubka the National Olympic Committee represented Ukraine at the XX Olympic Winter Games in Torino 2006 where Ukrainian athletes won 2 bronze medals and at the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing 2008 where 27 Olympic medals, the greatest number during independence years, were added to the glory of Ukrainian sport.
