The great sport celebration – all-Ukrainian awarding ceremony “Heroes of Sports Year 2008” - took place on one of the main stages of the country, the stage of the National Palace of Art “Ukraine”, on 3 March 2009.
For the third time the National Olympic Committee, the Ministry for Family, Youth and Sports of Ukraine and Committee of the Parliament on Family, Youth, Sports and Tourism supported by the General Sponsor of the NOC of Ukraine mobile operator MTS Ukraine brought together Olympic champions and medal winners of all times, coaches, experts and those who work for the benefit of the national sport.
The athletes who during the past year were the victors of Olympic and world sports arenas were nominated to be the heroes.
Famous Ukrainian actors and stars of show business including Ani Lorak, Ivo Bobul, Kamalia, Viktor Pavlik, Anatoliy Khostikoyev, Bogdan Benyuk and many others contributed to the festive atmosphere of the celebration.
The following nominees were acknowledged the winners:
1. “The Best Sportsman of the Year” – Vasyl Lomachenko
2. “The Best Sportswoman of the Year” – Inna Osypenko-Radomska
3. “The Best Coach of the Year” – Vadym Guttsait
4. “The Best Team of the Year” – Ukrainian Fencing Women Team (sabre): Olga Kharlan, Olena Khomrova, Galyna Pundyk, Olga Zhovnir
5. “Sensation of the Year” – Nataliya Dobrynska
6. “The Best Sports Organizer” – Volodymyr Brynzak
7. “Person of Fortitude” (Paralympic sports) – Andriy Kalyna
8. “Sponsor of the Sport Year” – MTS Ukraine
9. “Together with Olympians” (non-Olympic sports) – Mykola Shcherbak and Sergiy Popov
10. “Sports Glory of Ukraine” – Lyudmyla Gurevych and Viktor Tsybulenko
11. “Public Selection” – Anna Bezsonova
12. Special “Fair Play” Award – Mykola Zots
13. Special Award of the International Olympic Committee “For Nobleness and Adherence to the Principles of Fair Play” – Sergey Bubka
14. Special Award “For Dedication” – Anatoliy Usenko

The third all-Ukrainian ceremony “Heroes of Sports Year” went down in history and everybody is looking forward to new sport moments and bright victories of our athletes.
