Meeting of Dr. Jacques Rogge with Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament Oleksandr Moroz

Today morning the IOC President Jacques Rogge had a meeting with the Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament Oleksandr Moroz. At the meeting there were present the IOC Members – NOC President Sergey Bubka and Valeriy Borzov, NOC vice president Volodymyr Brynzak, NOC Secretary General Volodymyr Gerashchenko, Chairman of the Parliament Committee for Family, Youth and Sport Mykola Tomenko, the Parliament Committee members – Ravil Safiulin, Viktor Korzh, Elbrus Tedeyev and Oleksandr Volkov.
At the beginning of the meeting the Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament said that during last Olympic Games the Ukrainian athletes achieved good results in many sports disciplines. As Oleksandr Moroz said, Ukraine and its government would do their best to support the Olympic Movement and sports in general. According to his words, in particularly, this support is being realized at the legislative level. To his mind respect to sport and the Olympic Movement is also shown by the fact that many famous athletes are Ukrainian Parliament members. Mr. Moroz underlined that the NOC members took an active part in formation of legislative basis for sport, collaborating closely with the Parliament Committee for Family, Youth and Sports. He also proposed the NOC of Ukraine to develop a program on popularization of the Olympic sports in the country.
In his part Dr. Rogge thanked the Chairman of the Parliament for his support to the Olympic Movement. “I see a comprehensive State’s support to the Olympic Movement in Ukraine. Parliament is a substantial tool for sports development and its legislative initiatives should certainly encourage this process”. Mr. Jacques Rogge emphasized that Ukraine was among the first countries, which ratified the UNESCO International Convention against Doping in Sport. The IOC President also drew attention to the importance of funds attraction, obtained from sports lotteries, for physical culture and sports needs. It is a main financial source for many NOCs.
The NOC of Ukraine President Sergey Bubka thanked the members of the Parliament Committee for close cooperation and mutual understanding. The NOC President addressed to the Chairman of the Parliament with a request to support the initiative of state financing the Olympic training programs planned by the NOC of Ukraine for 2007. “I am sure this let the Olympic Movement in our country achieve a new quality level”, Sergey Bubka said.
