Sergiy BUBKA - the President of the NOC of Ukraine

On June 23 - the 111th anniversary of the IOC foundation - by secret voting the XVIII Extraordinary General Assembly of the NOC of Ukraine elected the new president of the Ukrainian NOC. It is the IOC and NOC Executive Committees member, the famous athlete and Olympic champion Sergiy Bubka. As results showed among 111 votes 80 votes were given for Sergiy Bubka and 30 votes - for Mykola Martseniuk, one vote was nullified. Two other candidates - Valeriy Borzov and Ivan Fedorenko - withdrew their candidacy. At the suggestion of the newly elected president Volodymyr Brynzak - the Deputy Minister of the Ministry for Youth and Sports of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Biathlon Federation president, the NOC Executive Committee member - was elected the vice-president of the NOC of Ukraine.
In the beginning of the Assembly the Vice-Prime-Minister of Ukraine on the humanities issues Mykola Tomenko sent the Assembly participants greetings from the President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko. "President and the government realize the role Olympic movement in our country plays for raising its image in the world society. That's why the state will do its best for the Olympic values and ideals development and strengthening of the NOC of Ukraine positions. It is very important that Olympic champions take an active part in various sports projects that educate the young generation. More than ones while meeting with the President of our country and the Minister for Youth and Sports of Ukraine on sports issues we discussed the ways of sports development in our country in order to achieve and even improve the former results. Once again I would like to declare that the state will give a comprehensive support for development of the Olympic movement and propagation of the Olympic ideas in Ukraine", - Mykola Tomenko said.

Sergiy Bubka expressed his gratitude to 14 organizations that nominated him for elections of the NOC president. " It is a great honour and at the same time an immense responsibility for me. I thought a lot before taking a decision to participate in elections.
Ukraine is a great sports country respected in the world. And the first importance task for us is to raise this image for higher level. For this it is necessary to consolidate our efforts - the efforts of the NOC and the Ministry for Youth and Sports of Ukraine, sports federations and the NOC regional devisions and sports societies. From the point of view of this aspect it is necessary to sign an agreement between the NOC and the Ministry for Youth and Sports of Ukraine. The NOC of Ukraine has to cooperate more actively with sports federations in order to find the most effective ways of the development of any kind of sport. To increase efficiency of sports federations activity it is necessary to organize the Association of National Sports Federation which would become a body for synthesis of available problems and search the ways if their solution. We have to realize clearly and use such powerful potential represented by sports societies. The issue of sports personal training is also worth to be mentioned. As to this issue it is necessary to combine the efforts of the NOC, the Ministry for Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. The most problematic issue has been the issue of sports veterans. And I think we should establish a charitable fund to support them. There is no doubt that these people merited attention. We should not forget about the athletes who just finished their competitive activity. It is necessary to think of their integration, education and employment. At the same time we should pay attention to the problems and wishes of the active athletes. One of the most important problems the NOC will work actively is the fight against doping. I suggest to work out and publish a Sports Ethic Code that let more effectively bring up the young generation of athletes explaining them from their youth up a danger of doping usage. The priority direction is reestablishing of friendly relations with partners and sponsors whose support is planned to be used for financing of the regional programs introduced by the NOC regional divisions.
I am a patriot, I am a Ukrainian citizen. My priority is the Olympic Movement - a cause I devoted all my life to. I'll do my best for its flourishing in our country", Sergiy Bubka said.
Minister for Youth and Sport of Ukraine Mr. Yuriy Pavlenco congratulated Mr. Sergey Bubka on the occasion of his election the President of the NOC of Ukraine, "I am very pleased that the General Assembly elected Mr. Bubka the NOC President. He is world known and highly professional person. I hope for our close co-operation in solving urgent matters such as reconstruction of sport facilities, development of sport schools for children and youth, solving controversies within federations. We are already working out the fundamental document - Development Conception of Physical Education and Sport. This document will regulate directions of activity of sports organizations as well as their functions. As I have already said I do hope to co-operate closely with the NOC of Ukraine I am ready to make my contribution as NOC Executive Board member".

The newly elected NOC of Ukraine President Mr. Sergey Bubka awarded Mr. Viktor Yanukovych with the highest NOC award, Mark of Honour, for his important contribution to the development of the Olympic Movement in Ukraine.
In conclusion Mr. Sergey Bubka expressed his gratitude to the NOC members for their trust and emphasized that he relies on their support.
